AI vs. Your BIM Software's AI Features: What's the Difference

Most architecture firms already have some AI in their toolkit, whether they think of it that way or not. Autodesk, Snaptrude, and other BIM/CAD vendors have been adding AI-assisted features for years: generative massing options, clash detection, automated dimensioning. If you already pay for these tools, a fair question is whether you need anything else.

What vendor AI features are built to do

These features live inside the design tool itself, and that's both their strength and their limit. They're built to speed up modeling and design exploration: generating layout options, catching geometry conflicts, suggesting structural adjustments. They're genuinely useful for what they do, and they keep improving with every software release.

Where they stop

None of these features touch the administrative layer that surrounds the design work: the tender response that needs drafting, the meeting notes that need writing up, the site condition report that needs assembling from photos. Your BIM software has no opinion about any of this, because it was never built to. That's not a criticism of the software, it's simply outside its job.

It doesn't compete with your design software's AI features, it looks at everything around them: documentation, coordination, tender response, client communication. The two are complementary, not competing, and most firms need both to actually feel the benefit across the whole office, not just inside the modeling window.

How to think about the two together

Keep your BIM/CAD software's AI features running exactly as they are. Layer a separate, deliberate look at the administrative side on top, rather than assuming one covers the other. Firms that treat vendor AI features as "our AI strategy" tend to leave the biggest time-cost, the paperwork around the design, untouched.
